The design of State of Grace seeks to balances the rich Texas traditions of hunting ranches, the affluent well heeled, traditional style of the surrounding River Oaks neighborhood and the midcentury modern period in which the restaurants’ structure was built. The idea was to create a space that appears to have evolved over time, whereby each new generation reused existing furnishings, lighting and decorative items inherited from the building. The wide plank oak floors have a worn rubbed finish that implies a hundred-year wear and keeps the space feeling comforting and informal. The lighting is a mix of vintage chandeliers, and custom mid-century chandeliers. Antique deer antlers and gold framed mirrors bring texture to the soaring 15 ft tall ceilinged spaces. In 2020 it won the Food Networks Best Restaurant in Houston award.
PSB was involved towards the last months of construction, and then involved in several months of close out, punch list and ongoing design upkeep.
